EU Current Situation
Health services gross product in the EU: 650 billion Euros, approximately 9% of the EGP.
Main Aspects: High risk for patient safety. Aging of the population. Demand for high-quality services, for everyone, everywhere. Need to effectively react to public health crisis. Important role as a driver in the evolution of other markets (ICT and Food).

The Individual has needs (maintaining health or treating illnesses), and through his/her choices (Preferences, Rights) expresses his/her free will (but awareness is a necessary condition for exercising individual freedom to decide).

By using all the latest ICT devices (Mobile phones, PDAs, etc), PIPS helps the individual by providing all the information needed at the point of decision (home, supermarket, restaurant, gym) in order to make informed decisions and thus helping him/her to follow GP’s therapeutical and nutritional instructions for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Moreover PIPS allows the HC professionals to have all the medical-scientific knowledge available for defining a “healthy plan” tailored to the patient that includes therapeutical treatment (if needed), nutrition guidelines and physical activity planning.

About Information Society Technologies

"IST Vision: anywhere anytime natural access to IST services for all"

European research activities are structured around consecutive programmes, or so-called Framework Programmes. The Sixth Framework Programme set out the priorities - including the IST Priority - for the EU's research, technological development and demonstration (RTD) activities for the period 2002-2006. These priorities were identified on the basis of a set of common criteria reflecting the major concerns of increasing industrial competitiveness and the quality of life for European citizens in a global information society. It aims to increase innovation and competitiveness in European businesses and industry and to contribute to greater benefits for all European citizens.
